Supporting Local High Schoolers

Leland's population has grown over 60% in the last 20 years, and with that has come substantial economic growth. However, a third of all children in Leland still grow up in poverty, and 54% of North Brunswick High School students qualify for free or reduced lunch.  

Finances play a significant role in many students' decisions about what to do after graduating from high school. Approximately 60% of North Brunswick seniors do not pursue higher education, with most citing financial barriers as the major obstacle. The primary aim of this scholarship is to alleviate financial barriers to higher education for local students who might otherwise be unable to pursue a secondary degree.

Addressing Healthcare Workforce Shortages

Brunswick County is designated as a Medically Underserved Area, with a scarcity of primary care providers, a high poverty rate, and a large elderly population. According to data from the UNC Sheps Center for Health Services Research, the county lags state averages for per capita numbers of all healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and dentists. Continued population growth and increasing rates of chronic disease will further the need for healthcare providers in this region. By prioritizing applicants who plan to complete health degrees, the MLK Health Careers Scholarship works to address the ever-growing need for healthcare professionals.
